Fibroadenomas: Understanding the Most Common Breast Lump in Young Women

Updated: Mar 15

Breast lumps can be a source of anxiety and worry for women of all ages. While some lumps can be concerning, many are benign, like fibroadenomas. Today, at Prajnam Complete Breast Care, we're shedding light on fibroadenomas, the most common type of breast lump in young women.

What are Fibroadenomas?

Fibroadenomas are non-cancerous (benign) tumors composed of both glandular and fibrous tissue. They typically feel like smooth, round, or oval lumps that move easily under the skin hence also called breast mouse. They can range in size from a pea to a golf ball and usually occur in one or both breasts.

Who Gets Fibroadenomas?

Fibroadenomas are most common in young women between the ages of 15 and 35, although they may be detected at any age. Hormonal factors, particularly estrogen levels, are thought to play a role in their development. This is why they tend to enlarge during pregnancy or breast feeding and shrink or disappear after menopause.

Symptoms of Fibroadenomas

Most fibroadenomas are discovered during self-exams or routine breast exams. They may not cause any noticeable symptoms, but some women may experience:

A lump in the breast that feels firm, rubbery, or smooth

• Tenderness or pain in the breast, especially before a period

• Discharge from the nipple (rare)

Diagnosing Fibroadenomas

If you discover a lump in your breast, it's important to consult your doctor. They will perform a physical examination and may order additional tests, such as:

Mammograms: X-rays of the breasts to visualize the lump and surrounding tissue.

Ultrasounds: Sound waves to create a detailed image of the lump.

USG guided needle biopsy: A thin needle is used to extract a small tissue sample from the lump for examination under a microscope.

Why should we treat Fibroadenomas if they are not cancerous?

Although fibroadenomas are benign tumours and will not spread to the body. But still in special cases your doctor may advise you to get it removed.

If the fibroadenoma is large or located beneath the nipple or causing discomfort or cosmetically bothersome, your doctor may like to remove it. Also, in special situations where a transplant is planned or prior to IVF treatment, your doctor may like to remove it. Sometimes, we need to remove it for psychosocial reasons.

How are the fibroadenomas removed?

They can be removed in two ways – one way is where a big incision/cut is given on the breast over the lump after giving general anesthesia to the patient. This needs 3-5 days of admission and rest. There are more chances of post-surgery infection and hematoma.

The other, modern advanced way available at Prajnam Complete Breast Care, is to remove the lump while seeing it on USG through a needle after local anesthesia. This gives more precision, and more cosmesis. This is absolutely scar less procedure with almost no post procedure care.

This innovative approach minimizes scarring and promotes faster healing, ensuring you feel confident and comfortable throughout your recovery.

Living with Fibroadenomas

A diagnosis of a fibroadenoma can be unsettling, but it's important to remember that they are benign and do not increase your risk of developing breast cancer. Regular breast exams and monitoring by your doctor are key to managing fibroadenomas and maintaining your breast health.

Important Disclaimer: While fibroadenomas are common, remember that not all mobile breast lumps are fibroadenomas. If you discover any lump in your breast, it's crucial to consult your breast specialist immediately for proper diagnosis and personalized care. Don't hesitate to prioritize your health and seek professional guidance.
