What Questions Should I Ask My Breast Doctor About Breast Health?

A breast health appointment should not be a one-way conversation.

Whether you are visiting because of breast pain, a lump, nipple discharge, family history, or simply want to understand your breast health better, asking the right questions can help you leave with greater clarity.

Not sure what to ask? Start with these.

1. Is This Breast Change Normal?

Breasts can change with age, hormonal fluctuations, periods, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause.

But a new or unusual change deserves attention.

Tell your doctor about any lump, persistent pain, nipple discharge, skin change, swelling or change in breast shape you have noticed. Ask what could be causing it and whether further evaluation is needed.

2. What Is My Breast Cancer Risk?

Breast cancer risk is not determined by family history alone.

Your doctor may consider your age, personal and family history, previous breast conditions and other relevant factors.

Ask: “Based on my history, where does my breast cancer risk stand?”

Understanding your risk can help guide decisions about screening and whether a more individualised breast-health plan is appropriate.

3. When Should I Start Mammograms and How Often Do I Need Them?

There is no single mammogram schedule that applies to every woman.

Screening recommendations can vary according to age, individual risk and the guideline being followed.

Ask your doctor when you should begin mammography and whether screening every year or every two years is appropriate for you.

4. Do I Need a Mammogram, Breast Ultrasound or Both?

Mammography and breast ultrasound are different imaging tools and are used for different purposes.

The appropriate test may depend on your age, symptoms, breast density and clinical findings.

Rather than choosing a test yourself, ask your doctor  why a particular breast imaging test is being recommended and what it is intended to evaluate.

5. Does My Family History Change My Screening Plan?

Tell your doctor about breast and other relevant cancers on both your mother’s and father’s sides of the family.

Ask whether your family history changes your breast cancer risk, whether you may need earlier or additional screening, and whether genetic counselling should be considered.

6. What Breast Changes Should I Never Ignore?

Ask your doctor what is normal for your breasts and which changes should prompt an appointment.

A new breast or armpit lump, unexplained nipple discharge, nipple retraction, persistent skin changes, swelling or another unusual breast change may require assessment.

Knowing what deserves attention can help you act without either ignoring a change or becoming anxious about every variation.
