So, when does a nipple change deserve attention?

The important clue is often not how your nipples look, but whether something has recently changed from what is normal for you.

Which Nipple Variations Can Be Normal?

Some nipple characteristics may simply be part of your natural anatomy. Nipples may naturally point outward, lie relatively flat or have been inverted for many years.

Their appearance can also change with hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, breastfeeding and age.

A longstanding feature that has remained unchanged is different from a nipple that suddenly begins to look or behave differently.

What Nipple Changes Should You Get Checked?

A new or unexplained nipple change deserves medical assessment, particularly when you notice:

a nipple that has recently turned inward or become retracted
unexpected or bloody nipple discharge
persistent crusting, scaling or changes in the nipple skin
redness or swelling that does not settle
a new lump behind or close to the nipple
a persistent change affecting only one breast

These symptoms do not automatically mean breast cancer. Benign breast conditions, infections and changes within the milk ducts can also affect the nipple.

However, the cause cannot be determined simply by looking at the symptom.

What About Nipple Discharge?

Nipple discharge can occur for different reasons, and its significance depends on factors such as whether it occurs spontaneously, affects one or both breasts, and what the discharge looks like.

Discharge that occurs without squeezing, particularly from one breast or when bloody, should be discussed with a breast doctor.

A breast specialist may recommend clinical examination, breast ultrasound, diagnostic mammography or another investigation depending on your age and symptoms.

What If Your Nipple Suddenly Turns Inward?

Some women naturally have inverted nipples. That alone may not indicate a problem.

A newly inverted or retracted nipple, however, is different and should be assessed, particularly when accompanied by a lump, skin change or discharge.
